Pass: Explain the types, purposes and functions of editing for film and tv
Explain how meaning is created in one genre of film or tv program through the different applications of editing techniques
Clearly identify what the continuity and non continuity editing is.
Explain you are going to analyse a selection of clips to evaluate their use of specific editing techniques.
Closely analyse the following clips, which provide good examples of various editing techniques from past and present
● Battleship Potemkin: The Complete Odessa Steps Sequence, documents an early use of montage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laJ_1P-Py2k
● Way Down East- DW Griffith, Early Example of Parallel editing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI2e3pXat54
● Example of Parallel Editing in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM
● Rocky III Training montagehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4soF2wigKSM
● Team America - spoof montage explains the use of montage well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhWiTORp22k
For each clip your analysis must show you can:
Explain the type of editing (use the powerpoint for guidance).
Explain the possible purposes of the editing (use the powerpoint for guidance)
Draw specific reference to a number of editing techniques that have been used in order to achieve that purpose
For higher grades you must evaluate – this means you must identify:
What the purpose was
What techniques have been used to achieve that purpose (using technical terminology)
How effectively the effect/impact has been achieved via the use of these techniques.
Types of editing in film and tv include

You may choose to directly compare two uses of similar techniques (e.g. the use of parallel editing between Griffith and Silence of the Lambs) and consider which if any you find more effective and why
Way Down East- DW Griffith, Early Example of Parallel editing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI2e3pXat54
In this Way Down East clip, parallel action is used which is an effect created when two or more actions in two or more different locations are presented by cross-cutting between them. The viewer get the impression that the actions that are taking place in three different locations, are at the same time, which is its purpose. The clip includes shots of the land meeting and breaking apart from one another, a woman lying still, face up on a piece of ice, and a man chasing the lady. Mixing all of these clips up and putting them in its order makes it engaging to the audience, and the dramatic music that intensifies as the clip goes on adds to it.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM
In a successful attempt to be very misleading to the audience, parallel editing is used, which is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations. The two different locations used are two different houses, one which is being surrounded by some sort of search and fescue team, and the other location of a house where there is a woman being held hostage. With the medium, long and close up shots, tension builds up as the audience doesn't know what will happen once the criminal gets confronted by the armed officers, which will take longer than thought, as they eventually realize they targeted the wrong house.
